Gemma Koomen is a freelance illustrator based in beautiful, rural Northumberland in the North East of England, UK. Inspired by nature, ceremony, nostalgia and simplicity, Gemma’s work is driven by the desire to capture little moments of happiness, recreating the familiar and mundane into elements of magical possibility.
Her love of painting and drawing began as a child when she would spend her days in an imaginary world created with crayons and pencils on the backs of her artist fathers rejected screenprints, on walls and underneath furniture. Gemma went on to study Fine Art Photography at Glasgow School of art, go on to complete a whirlwind Masters in Illustration at the University of Sunderland and continue to work as a photographer, web-designer and occasional illustrator in between raising two children with her husband, furniture maker, Jody Koomen. Through the years, the love of drawing and painting remained, and inspired her to start illustrating freelance full-time.
Gemma loves plants, tea in the sunshine, rambling walks in the countryside and is often found either doodling in the garden or deep in mud on the farm where she lives with her husband and two daughters. She is available to commission and selected screen prints and other goodies will be available to buy in her online shop at www.gemmakoomenshop.com!
